Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina approved the emergency motion, altering how platform access is restricted. Residents linked to Michigan addresses can no longer trade sports contracts, while users outside the state retain full access. This adjustment replaces the previous blanket geographic block.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed the underlying lawsuit in March, asserting that Kalshi operates unlicensed sports betting within the state. The current two-week temporary order continues to bar the company from marketing or selling sports trading products in Michigan while the case proceeds. A court hearing is set for Monday, coinciding with the expiration of the temporary suspension.
The litigation serves as a direct test of how state gambling regulators handle prediction market instruments. Nevada authorities have launched a parallel dispute, citing similar concerns over user location verification. Separately, the Michigan Gaming Control Board recently left the National Council on Problem Gambling following the group’s decision to admit Kalshi as a member.
